- This event has passed.
San Francisco International Airport
May 4, 2017 - August 10, 2017
SFO Museum is pleased to partner with photographer Elaine Mayes to present twelve images from her historic documentation of the Monterey Pop Music Festival held June 16th through June 18th, 1967, at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. The three-day event played a significant role in launching the “Summer of Love” in San Francisco and served as the first large-scale public introduction to artists and groups like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and The Who, all of whom are featured in the exhibition.
Elaine Mayes began her career as a photojournalist in the late 1960s, first gaining attention for her portraits of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district residents and her images of rock and roll performers. Mayes’ work is held in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Elaine Mayes: It Happened in Monterey will be exhibited in Terminal 3, Boarding Area F from May 04, 2016, to August 10, 2016. The exhibition is located post-security and is only accessible to passengers ticketed for travel through Terminal 3. There is no charge to view the exhibition.
