Renowned music critic and author Joel Selvin, whose weekly column ran in the San Francisco Chronicle from 1972 to 2009, shares first-hand reflections on the music, politics, and wild times of a magical chapter in San Francisco history. Presidio Trust historian Barbara Berglund opens the evening with a presentation on the Presidio during the Summer of Love, as the military post met the epicenter of the counterculture.
In addition to his decades with the San Francisco Chronicle, Joel Selvin has published articles in Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times, Billboard, Melody Maker, and has written liner notes for dozens of recorded albums He has appeared in documentaries about the music scene and has occasionally taken the stage himself as a rock and roll singer. His many books covering various aspects of pop music include Summer of Love: The Inside Story of LSD, Rock & Roll, Free Love and High Times in the Wild West; The Haight with photographer Jim Marshall (named one of the ten best rock books of the year by Rolling Stone magazine); the No. 1 New York Times best-seller, Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, which Selvin co-wrote with Sammy Hagar; and most recently Altamont: The Rolling Stones, The Hells Angels, And The Inside Story Of Rock’s Darkest Day.
